The Plainfield Recreation Department is located in the Community Services Complex on Norwich Road.  The facility is home to a Senior Center, Child Care Center and Recreation Department. Off site the department is responsible for the town indoor swimming pool and the school department’s school age child care program. The department is responsible for the planning and supervision of variety of recreation related activities for adults and children.  Participants range from toddlers to senior citizens.  A sample of programs include:  land and water aerobics, trips, yoga, craft classes, music concerts, family fun events, holiday parties and teen dances. The department participates in many other joint ventures with community organizations.

The recreation department operates an indoor swimming pool located in the basement of the Town Hall.  This heated pool is 30’ by 60’.  A series of open swim times, lessons and exercise classes are available for the public.  The pool is open six days a week year-round.

As a community service the Recreation Department organizes the Annual “Toys for Us” program and provides through local donations toys to seventy five families.

The department operates a self-supporting Child Care Center.  This program provides quality care and a learning environment for children three to five years of age. This program is licensed through the Department of Public Health. It has a capacity of thirty five children. The center is open 6:30am-6:00pm Monday through Friday. The Recreation Department is the contractor for the Plainfield Public Schools School Age Child Care Program.  The program is offered at the three elementary schools.

The Plainfield Senior Citizen Center is a multi-use facility serving the needs of the elderly in Plainfield.  Through the Plainfield Seniors (a club) volunteers plan activities and functions at the center.  Hot lunch is served Monday through Fridays at the “Senior Café”, a TVCCA Congregate Meal Site. Special Senior Café Days and monthly events provide a hub of activities.  Center weekly activities include exercise, crafts, cards, chorus, billiards, sewing, social activities, educational programs and trips.  A computer hooked to the internet is also available. Through the Center for Healthy Aging a lawyer is on hand weekly for advice and a nurse practitioner for medical problems and concerns.  A seven passenger handicapped accessible van is operated for the elderly in Plainfield.  This program is partially funded through a grant from Title III Funding of the Older Americans Act through Senior Resources (formally Eastern CT Area Agency on Aging.)

We welcome and encourage residents to contact our office with program ideas and suggestions.
