Responsibilities:

The Tax Collector is responsible for the collection of all monies due to the Town including, but not limited to:

  • Real Estate Taxes
  • Sewer Use
  • Sewer Assessment
  • Motor Vehicle Taxes
  • Personal Property Taxes

The Collector is also responsible for reporting fiscal information to the various Town Departments, Boards and Commissions, the State of Connecticut and the United States Bureau of the Census

Methods of payments:

The office accepts checks, cash, money orders, and credit cards.

You can pay your taxes online through this LINK with a credit card, debit card or electronic check.

There is a fee charged for the use of this service which is applied at the time of your transaction.

Credit Cards: 2.5%, $2.00 Minimum
Debit card: $3.95
E-Checks: Flat fee of $2.00 on checks up to $10,000. $10 fee on anything over $10,000
Interest is assessed on all delinquent amounts at the first of the month at the rate of 1.5% per month, from the DUE DATE. There is a minimum interest charge of $2 per bill. FIRE DISTRICT TAXES ARE NOT COLLECTED IN THIS OFFICE.

Please note that to obtain Sewer Usage information, you must use the property's Unique ID number. (This is important as both Real Estate Taxes and Sewer Use come out on the same bill here so must be included in an escrow).

What if I do not receive a bill?
If you do not receive a tax bill for a vehicle you own, contact the Tax Office (860) 230-3019 Connecticut State Statute 12-130 states that failure to receive a bill does not invalidate the tax.
How is the tax rate established?
A property tax rate is expressed in mills, or thousandth of a dollar. Tax rate (mill rate) of 28.33 mills is equivalent to $28.33 in taxes per $1000 of net assessed value. The Town of Plainfield sets the mill rate annually in May/June as part of a municipal budget process.
What happens if I no longer own the motor vehicle or have moved out of Plainfield?
